Founded in 1873, the 16th Street Baptist Church was a pillar of the community, earning the nickname “Everybody’s Church.”
In the 1960s, the church was at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. And it was where a Ku Klux Klan bombing killed four little girls, which galvanized the community and the world and served as a catalyst for the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
2023 is both the 150th anniversary of the church’s founding and the 60th anniversary of the bombing. Today, the church honors its rich history and activates its “dream of the future”: Teach Lessons, Touch Lives and Transform This Land.
